Updating our garage was not my number one priority, but when I found Faux Brick panels at Home Depot, I knew our garage needed a Faux Brick Wall! It was such a fun project that was easy to pull together and looks amazing. All you need are some faux brick panels, a little joint compound, a friend to help, and a weekend to have an incredible looking Faux Brick Wall of your own.

First things first, let’s talk about these game-changers – faux brick panels. These panels are a DIYer’s dream come true. They are lightweight and easy to install, and way more affordable than even thin-set brick. They mimic the look and feel of real bricks without the mess and hassle. No need to hire a mason or deal with heavy materials; these panels are designed for simplicity. 

Whether you’re into the classic red brick vibe or prefer a whitewashed finish, faux brick panels have got you covered. I knew I wanted a whitewashed look, so I added the joint compound to my wall, but if you want to stay with the classic red brick vibe, just be sure to line up your bricks carefully. These panels will work perfect for you as well! The best part? This whole process won’t take up your entire weekend. It’s a DIY win-win!

How to Create an Easy Brick Wall

1.  measure and plan out your wall.

The first step is going to be to measure and plan out your wall. The brick panels I used come in 4’ x 8’ panels. I measured the wall and determined how many panels I needed. Be sure you figure out any cuts you’ll need to do.

2. Prep your space.

Prep your space. This is always the step that takes the longest time! You will want to have an open space to maneuver these big panels, and have easy access to your wall. Be sure it’s cleaned and ready to go.

3. attach panels to wall

Start by attaching your first panel to the wall. I started in the upper right corner of the wall. I definitely suggest you have help for this. Start by nailing your first panel near the top of the panel into the stud. You’ll want to be sure to nail these panels into the studs to make sure they are secure. 

After nailing your first panel, attach your second next to it. You’ll want to cut out any light sockets, electrical outlets, or anything else you want to avoid. I just used a keyhole saw or a jigsaw.

Continue attaching all the panels to the wall that can be attached whole. Be sure you’re attaching them into the studs, and use a few nails to keep it secure.

4. start cutting down your panels

When you are ready, start cutting down your panels to size. I used a circular saw, but you could use a table saw or even a jigsaw. Be sure to measure twice, and cut once because you want these pieces to fit snugly. 

Attach your smaller pieces to the wall, the same way you attached the full size panels. 

Now it’s time for the fun (read: messy!) part. We are going to be distressing the bricks with joint compound. I love the distressed white brick look, and the joint compound did the trick. 

5. Prep your space.

Prep your space. I used painter’s tape all along the edges where I didn’t want the joint compound to touch. You could also put down plastic, but we’re doing this in the garage, so I wasn’t too worried about it.

6. mix up your joint compound

When you’re ready, be sure to mix up your joint compound well, then get going! I used a drywall/putty knife to smear the joint compound onto the wall. I would definitely recommend getting plastic, not metal, so you don’t ruin your faux brick. 

Add more or less joint compound, depending on how you want your wall to look. 

When you’re finished, let your joint compound dry, then take a step back and look at your wall. Are there spaces where you need a little more coverage? Add more joint compound. Places where it’s a little thicker than you’d like? A light sand can take a bit of the compound off. 

Tips and Tricks

  • I used my brick in the garage, but don’t be afraid to mix faux brick panels with other wall treatments like shiplap or beadboard. Combining textures can create a visually interesting space.
  • Explore different color options for your faux brick panels. I went with white, but you could use earthy tones, grays, or even a pop of color to completely transform the vibe of your space.
  • Make sure you have all the necessary materials before starting. This will help you not have to take 10000 trips to Home Depot and allow you to have a smooth project.
