With just a few supplies and a dash of creativity, you’ll be amazed at how easy and fun it is to create stunning decor pieces that won’t break the bank.
I was browsing through vases for my home when I stumbled upon the vase of my dreams. The only problem? The price tag was enough to make my wallet weep! But instead of walking away defeated, I decided to take matters into my own hands. With a plain vase and a vision, I decided to make my own version. It was simpler than I ever imagined!
With just a few coats of paint and a steady hand, I transformed an ordinary vase into a work of art for my home. The best part? The process was so fun and simple, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t tried it sooner!
Supplies for Flipping a Checkered Vase
Materials:
- Vase in whatever size and shape you’d like. Check thrift stores!
- White spray paint
- Black acrylic paint
- Small paintbrush and pencil
- Clear spray paint to seal your vase

How to DIY a Checkered Vase
1. Source your vase
Source your vase. I found mine at the thrift store and it was the perfect shape! Look around. You might even have a vase you love in your home already.

2. Paint vase
Start with 2 coats of white spray paint. You want to be sure that you have a very smooth and opaque white base for your vase.
When your white paint is totally dry, it’s time to start on the black squares! I started with pencil so I could be sure I liked the placement. These lines are meant to be organic and a little imperfect so don’t worry about that. The only tip I have is to make sure your top row has an even number so your checkerboard lines up correctly!

Paint every other square black. I just used a small paintbrush and black acrylic paint.
I added a cute gold accent at the top with gold paint. If I did this again, I would have taped this line to make it more crisp but it turned out alright.
3. Coat your entire vase in clear spray paint
Coat your entire vase in clear spray paint to keep it from chipping. I recommend 2-3 coats of clear coat. And there you go! A beautiful custom vase for your collection.

Tips and Tricks
- Start with a clean, dry vase to ensure the paint adheres properly.
- If you’re not wanting the causal, hand-drawn look, use painter’s tape to create clean, crisp lines for your checkered pattern.
- Experiment with different color combinations to match your decor style.
- Apply thin, even coats of spray paint to avoid drips and streaks.
What type of spray paint works best for spraying on glass?
When it comes to spraying paint on glass, it’s important to choose a spray paint specifically designed for multi-surface applications, including glass. Look for spray paints labeled as “glass paint” or “multi-surface paint” to make sure your paint sticks well and doesn’t peel off. These paints typically contain special additives that help them adhere to smooth surfaces like glass without flaking or peeling. Additionally, look for spray paints with a satin or gloss finish for a sleek and polished look. Before painting, make sure to thoroughly clean and dry the glass surface to remove any dust or residue, and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for best results.
