How to DIY an Arched Rock Climbing Wall

1. Cut the plywood sheet

Cut the plywood sheet to your desired size using a saw. I used a jig with a circular saw, but you could use a table saw. Secure one end of a string to the center of the plywood, half the width of the plywood down. Then, pull the string taut and loop it over a pencil at the desired height of the arch. Keeping the string tight, gently trace the curve onto the plywood, ensuring a smooth and symmetrical shape.

2. cut an arched shape at the top of the plywood

Use a jigsaw or circular saw to cut an arched shape at the top of the plywood, following the line you drew. Sand the edges of the plywood smooth to remove any roughness or splinters. Clean the surface of the plywood to remove any dust or debris.

3. Prime your hand holds

Prime your hand holds if you want to paint them. I got my hand holds from Amazon and they came in really bright colors, so priming was necessary.

4. Decide where your hand holds go

Lay out your hand holds on your piece of plywood, and mark each with a pencil to know where to drill. Drill a hole into your plywood where each hand hold will go. My hand holds came with anchors, so just be sure to drill however wide you need for your hand holds. Hammer the anchors into the plywood in each of your drilled holes.

5. Find the studs on your wall

Find the studs on your wall to create a super secure climbing wall. Use giant construction screws to drill the plywood into the wall into the studs. Screw on your hand holds using the screws/tools your kit comes with and that’s it! You can definitely paint your climbing wall however you’d like. How do I maintain and care for a climbing wall?

To maintain and care for a climbing wall, regularly inspect the handholds, plywood, and mounting hardware for signs of wear or damage. Tighten any loose screws and replace any damaged handholds or hardware as needed. Keep the climbing wall clean by wiping down the handholds and plywood with a damp cloth to remove dirt and chalk buildup. Ensure the climbing area is clear of obstacles and debris, and provide adequate padding or flooring to cushion falls. Additionally, check the wall’s stability and alignment and address any issues promptly to ensure a safe, fun time for your kids.
